About the scholarship

The goal of the Harvard Academy is to build an inclusive community of scholars with a variety of experiences, perspectives, and methods by welcoming a diverse pool of applicants as students. The Harvard University Academy Scholars program seeks to support outstanding scholars at the beginning of their career whose work combines disciplinary excellence in the social sciences or law with fluency in the language and history or culture of countries or areas outside the United States or Canada. 

 The Academy Scholars are a select community of individuals with resourcefulness, initiative, and originality whose work has the potential to create a foundation for careers in research universities and global institutions. 

 The Academy Scholars receive research and financial assistance, which enables them to undertake research projects and skills development in their chosen fields. 

What are the requirements for applying to the program? 
  • To apply for the Harvard University Academy Scholars program, candidates will have to fulfill certain requirements, which are given below. 
  • The applicant has to have recently received their Ph.D. (or comparable professional school degree) or has to be an advanced doctoral candidate in the social sciences. 
  • Applicants who have nearly completed their dissertation have to submit their degree conferral documentation issued by their university’s registrar by June 30, 2023, for an August 1, 2023 start date.
  • Applicants who hold or have previously completed another Harvard postdoctoral fellowship cannot apply.
 Process of applying for the Harvard University Academy Scholars program

To apply for the scholarship, log on to the Harvard Academy’s official website and click on the APPLY ONLINE button. 

 For the application, the applicant needs to submit their CV along with a list of publications, their research proposal of a maximum of 2000 words which includes the objectives and planned research and methodological work, a scholarly writing sample in English, a copy of their Ph.D. program transcript and three letters of recommendation in PDF format. All the application documents need to be submitted by the deadline. 

Benefits of the scholarship

There are various benefits the students who are selected for the Academy’s scholar program will receive for academic purposes. 
  • The academy scholars receive financial aid to support their research and assistance for the same. 
  • The postdoctoral Harvard University Academy Scholars program receives an annual stipend of $70000, and five or six applicants are selected. 
  • If the applicant is selected before they receive their Ph.D., the students will receive a stipend of $35000 annually till they are awarded their Ph.D. 
  • They are mentored by the senior Academy scholars who guide and support them through the task of achieving their potential. 
 Terms of the scholarship 

There are certain conditions attached to accepting the scholarship that the selected applicants have to adhere to, which are given below. 
  • The selected scholars will have to complete the two-year appointments within a three-year window. 
  • The first year of the fellowship should be taken by fall at the latest, immediately following the postdoctoral fellowship offer. 
  • The selected scholars are not allowed to delay or defer at the start of the first year. However, between the subsequent years, they are allowed to apply for one-time leave to either accept or continue a teaching commitment only. 
  •  The scholars are not permitted to accept any other sources of funding, awards, or obligations during their fellowship year.
